On Tuesday, the South Lake Tahoe City Council unanimously voted in an unnecessary and overreaching new permit process for vacation rentals without regard to the impact on the local economy. The passing of this new process was irresponsible by the current City Council who proceeded with a highly controversial ordinance without doing a study to fully understand the impacts this would have on tourism and the local economy. Had the City Council simply enforced their existing ordinance regarding noise, trash, and nuisance issues, the majority of the problems with vacation rentals would have gone away. The new permit process was a knee jerk reaction, and not needed. The Council was repeatedly asked to table the new permit process for at least a year, and simply enforce the existing ordinance, to see if there would be necessary changes at that time. But instead proceeded with their own agenda, ignoring a large portion of their voting constituents. The argument by some Council members that impact on the economy would be minimal is completely inaccurate. I have personally just lost a home sale, today, due to this onerous unnecessary ordinance and the concerns it has brought for a potential buyer/investor in our town. How's that for no effect on the economy and tourism?

Sorry for the typo. I meant "unanimously voted in an unnecessary and overreaching new permit process"

And just so everyone is aware... El Dorado County is NOT going to copy the City's new ordinance. They are leaving their current VHR ordinance as it is, with the exception of 2 minor changes. Some City representatives have been spreading lies and saying the County is going to follow what the City is doing.

What is happening in South Lake since the VHR vote? I heard several R.E. deals dropped out. Is it taking longer to sell? Have a whole bunch of long term rentals happened? Have those who own and want VHR's gone experienced an increase or decrease in property values. I think this is a big mistake and needs to be an issue in the next city council election.

I particularly believe there must be something done for re-sale of homes. IF someone presently has a permit and IS not having any complaints then the "permit" should be saleable sort of with the property with some criteria. This is sorely needed to avoid a serious downturn in city property. A buyer MUST know for certain if they need to VHR they can and this is one possible way to do that!

Hi Sue, We are still unsure what the effect of the ordinance will be. The REALTORs have been collecting reported instances in the City limits of delayed sales, price considerations, longer escrows, lower volume of sales, cancelled escrows, and reports of buyers who desire to look outside of the City due to the ambiguous, time consuming, and expensive process that the new permitting process entails.

I am most bothered that i was never notified of city meeting or discussion of this new ordinance by The City which has my phone, email and address. I send them money every quarter!

I only bought my house 2 years ago, and i bought it for the explicit reason of VHR...and now my costs are going to go up a few thousand dollars.

In regards to wording on keeping the character of a Single Family Home and not being an eyesore... what about all the run down motels.

Noise complaints are a small % due to VHR's, yet VHR's are being targeted.

Why bite the hand that feeds you?! House prices will certainly fall.

...and with increased cost, Nevada will see more revenue from lodging as a result.

(having issues with this site, sorry if repeating) Worse proposal item is to continue to punish perfectly compliant owners for actions of a renter, in fact more than the renter by way of losing permit and likely their house. We are NOT CRIMINALS! Only other comparison is law holding parents responsible for minor children's actions. Renters should not be treated as irresponsible children. What if Casinos and Hotels began getting business licenses revoked when someone staying there breaks any laws? Of course it happens and of course they are NOT revoked. That would be ABSURD! As far as having to physically meet guests, and also ruling out doing so via modern media options, what about heavy snow season and high traffic hours? While renter is delayed owner or paid representative wastes time and risks safety to travel in bad weather for what? Need to see renter's color? Does Amazon travel to your home to verify purchases, view your ID and credit card? Is it at all possible to respect owners who work SO hard and contribute immensely to the local economy and are NOT criminals? There are many rules and if all are obeyed please do NOT hold people responsible for the occasional and unavoidable idiot renter. We don't want these people in our homes but we cannot judge someone by their appearance, that is illegal, so why see them? Long after you suspend multiple permits and punish good people there will always still be disrespectful idiots coming to Tahoe. Problem is not being addressed. Please direct concerns and responsibilities to the correct persons, and whenever necessary punish the disrespectful idiots. I've always been compliant and personally have encouraged hundreds of visitors to come and enjoy and support Tahoe. I've paid hundreds of thousands to dozens of contractors, maids, etc. and I supported job growth. I've paid many thousands in taxes. I am about to surrender, sell my rental home and leave Tahoe. Please consider the result you are about to force upon good people.

The blame being put on the owner for renters' behavior is wrong. I do hope this gets corrected
